Sagrantino

Arnaldo Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco "Collepiano" 2006
24,50€; 14,5% abv. 22 months in French Barrique of which half is new. And considering that, this isn't as atrociously oaked as I feared. In fact, immediately upon opening, it smells lovely: wild and full of berry aromas, dark fruit but savoury. This might be the most tannic wine I have ever tried that still didn't feel painfully over-extracted, but refreshing and palate-cleansing instead. But it sadly does calm down and lose some of its personality the longer it was open. For the first hour it expanded my ideas on what wine can be - just like the first experience of a great new grape should. But after an hour it started to show more international aromas. Though the oak never did begin to dominate as much as I feared, something turned this from a wine overflowing with personality to one lacking personality in a very short time. I wonder if age will correct that? Will this become a wild, untamed beauty like during that first hour again? Anyways, this seems like a grape that I want to explore. Who else? Bea, of course, but others?
